Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be treated in treatment.
