Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their particular problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
