Sadly, the simple truth is that tens of millions of people decide to drive an automobile while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Doing so not just puts one's life at risk and puts passengers and others at risk at the same time, but being caught driving drunk (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will typically cause serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and in many cases incarceration. Sometimes anyone who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying substance abuse problem. The court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders alcohol and drug rehabilitation instead of other extreme consequences because of their crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in drug treatment as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eradicate other consequences of the crime, but could decrease the degree of such penalties to some great extent. Specifically if the person willingly takes part in drug treatment and is a first time offender. Studies show that a lot of folks who do receive alcohol and drug treatment for a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the courts for similar charges down the road.
