Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened probability of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own personal challenges can be remedied in treatment.
