Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated probability of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each individual so that their unique problems can be handled in rehab.
