Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services should be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support in order that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their unique challenges can be remedied in treatment.
