Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own personal problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
