Offering gender-specific rehabilitation services has proven beneficial in situations where traditional rehabilitation settings have fallen short, like coping with situations within a women's life which are distinctive and painful. Such issues may have to do with sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family and motherhood, and other significant issues that are particular to women. Studies show that women also can become involved in abusing drugs more easily than men, and so are more predisposed to illness as a result of drug abuse problems than males because of this. Because of obligations in the home, women also tend to postpone trying to find and undergoing treatment, a circumstance which can lead to disaster. Being mindful of this, rehab services for women are designed so that a women's needs are the concentration and priority. Much like coed programs, alcohol and drug rehabilitation facilities that provide rehab services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a first step. Following this step, counselors help women concentrate on both standard and gender-specific problems which may have triggered their substance abuse.
