Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased chance of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol.
