Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their unique challenges can be handled in rehab.
