Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs.
