Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face.
