Regrettably, it is a fact that tens of millions of people decide to drive a vehicle while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs. Doing this not simply puts one's life at risk and puts passengers among others at risk too, but being caught driving while impaired (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will more often than not bring about serious penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, fines and even time in jail. Often times a person who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying substance abuse issue. The court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to provide DUI and DWI Offenders drug treatment as an alternative to other extreme penalties for his or her crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in drug treatment as a DUI/DWI Offender might not completely eliminate other penalties from the crime, but can decrease the seriousness of such consequences to some large degree. Particularly if the person willingly participates drug and alcohol treatment and is a first time offender. Research indicates that a large percentage of those who do receive drug and alcohol rehab because of a DUI/DWI offense avoid the courts for comparable charges down the road.
