Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each person so that their unique problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
