Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face.
