Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol.
