Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person so that their own personal challenges can be treated in treatment.
