Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own personal challenges can be treated in rehab.
