Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their own personal challenges can be addressed in rehab.
