Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may trigger drug or alcohol use, or dangerous sexual conduct because of substance abuse could have caused the individual to contract the disease. People who have HIV/AIDS, either because of their drug use or as a pre-existing condition prior to their drug use problem, typically require rehab services tailored to meet their particular needs and challenges. Some of these challenges are physical in nature, because of the fact that substance abusers with HIV/AIDS very rarely take care of themselves and take the proper medicines they need to maintain their health. Therefore, they arrive to treatment in very poor health and this will have to be addressed as a priority while addressing other crucial issues. Besides the obvious necessity to supply medical services during rehabilitation, individuals with HIV/AIDS will also need to tackle more deeply rooted problems which prompted their drug or alcohol use. Very often, people have circumstances within their lives that are purely environmental which may have triggered them to turn to alcohol or drugs, such as oppressive conditions in their lives or negative relationships. These are the concerns which rehabilitation counselors will target as part of HIV/AIDS rehab services.
