Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may trigger substance abuse, or dangerous sexual conduct due to drug abuse could have caused the person to contract the disease. Individuals who have HIV/AIDS, either as a result of their substance abuse or as a pre-existing problem prior to their substance abuse problem, often require treatment services tailored to satisfy their particular needs and challenges. Some challenges are physical in nature, because of the fact that substance abusers with HIV/AIDS almost never care for themselves and take the appropriate medications they need to preserve their own health. Because of this, these individuals arrive to treatment in very poor health and this will have to be addressed as a priority whilst dealing with other critical issues. Besides the obvious requirement to offer medical solutions while in rehab, individuals with HIV/AIDS must also tackle more deeply rooted problems which prompted their alcohol or drug use. Usually, individuals have situations in their lives that are purely environmental which may have caused them to use drugs or alcohol, such as oppressive conditions in their lives or detrimental relationships. These are the issues which rehabilitation counselors will target as part of HIV/AIDS rehabilitation services.
