Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own challenges can be treated in treatment.
