Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased probability of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for each person so that their particular challenges can be remedied in treatment.
