Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for everybody so that their unique problems can be addressed in treatment.
