Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse.
