Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater probability of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their unique challenges can be addressed in treatment.
