Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol.
