Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each person to ensure their unique problems can be handled in rehab.
