Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support in order that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person so that their own problems can be handled in rehab.
