Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter.
