Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own personal problems can be remedied in rehab.
