Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for everybody so that their own personal problems can be treated in rehab.
