Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each person to ensure their particular problems can be remedied in treatment.
