Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater chance of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
