Offering gender-specific rehabilitation services has proven very helpful in circumstances where standard rehab facilities have fallen short, such as coping with situations within a women's life which are unique and distressing. Such issues may have to do with sexual abuse, physical trauma, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family members and motherhood, and other really serious issues which can be specific to women. Research shows that women can also become involved in substance abuse more readily than men, and so are more predisposed to illness due to addiction problems than males as a result. Due to responsibilities in their home, women also tend to postpone searching for and undergoing treatment, a situation which can be a catalyst for disaster. With this in mind, rehabilitation services for women are designed to ensure that a women's needs would be the concentration and priority. Similar to coed programs, drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities that provide treatment services to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a 1st step. After this step, counselors help women concentrate on both general and gender-specific concerns which may have triggered their drug abuse. Women also benefit from the beneficial support from their female peers, plus some programs that offer rehabilitation services to women also provide client beds for their young children.
