Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol.
