Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their particular problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
