Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person so that their own challenges can be handled in rehab.
