Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be worthwhile in situations where conventional rehab settings have fallen short, such as dealing with situations in a women's life which are distinctive and distressing. Such concerns may have to do with sexual abuse, physical trauma, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family members and motherhood, or another really serious issues that are specific to women. Research has shown that women can also become involved in drug abuse more readily than men, and so are more predisposed to illness as a result of drug abuse issues than males because of this. Because of responsibilities in their home, women also tend to postpone searching for and receiving care for addiction, a situation which can lead to catastrophe. With this in mind, rehab services for women are designed so that a women's needs are the concentration and priority. Just like coed centers, drug and alcohol rehab programs that offer rehab services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a first step. After this step, counselors help women target both general and gender specific issues which may have prompted their substance abuse. Women also may take advantage of the constructive support from their female peers, plus some programs which provide treatment services to women provide client beds for their children.
