Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their particular challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
