Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater likelihood of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions in order that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol.
