Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for each individual so that their unique challenges can be handled in treatment.
