Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their particular challenges can be handled in treatment.
