Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own challenges can be addressed in rehab.
