Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater risk of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own personal problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
