Individuals who want to maintain some flexibility in their lives can take advantage of an outpatient rehab whenever they need treatment for substance abuse. Outpatient rehab allows for the rehabilitation client to participate in rehab services without the commitment one would usually have to agree to in an inpatient or residential drug rehabilitation program. This doesn't often work in the rehab client's favor however, particularly for those clients who need to address substantial substance abuse problems. So while an outpatient rehab might appear to be an expedient option, it isn't for everyone. People who do decide on an outpatient rehab will typically take part in meetings and be a part of therapy and rehabilitation services on a part-time basis every day or several days a week. This is very helpful for those who have recently completed a much more comprehensive inpatient or residential program as a good aftercare or upkeep step, or for someone with only a short history of substance abuse which is usually a really small percentage of clients. For an individual with more serious addiction and dependency problems, inpatient or residential drug and alcohol treatment centers that provide rehab over a long-term basis will be the more effective rehabilitation option.
