Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be treated in treatment.
