Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated probability of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for everybody so that their own challenges can be treated in treatment.
