Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter.
