Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their unique problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
